Good and Bad Carbs

Potatoes and Pasta are both  carbohydrates rich  food, the only  diference is, one is a good crab and the other isn't.  Some says that potato  is a bad carb and other says it's not.  For me potato   is a good carb because it is not as bad as the processed foods that are high in carb like pasta.  Although potatoes  are good source of  dietary fiber, it  is not a great choice when you have diabetes.  We don't have  diabetes but when I make potatoes, I make sure to incorporate some veggies to make it  healthier.  Adding bell peppers and celery and some protien makes it a healthy  meal.
My husband love pasta but since he is gaining wight, I  only cook pasta once in a while.   Adding some type of vegetable like brocolli when serving pasta is a great option too.  My kids loves it wher there's  veggies in it.
Macaroni is considered to be a bad carb, but, you can prepare in a way that it would be a lot healthier.  I usually  add veggies  like chopped cucumbers, bel peppers, and parsley in it.  MY daughter love macaroni  especially when it is loaded with veggies.  She even made herself some to replicate what I made and I think she did a great job.
THere are also  healthier version of  pasta  like this Japanese soba noodles.  It is made of yam extract and buckwheat.  Again, adding veggies  makes it more healthy and yummy too!
According to Moss Greene, the BellaOnline's (The Vooice of Women)  Nutrition Editor, all carbohydrates are not created equal.  So it is important that we know which is the good carb and which is the bad.  She said that the good carbs on the list of carbohydrate foods can provide your body with energy, optimum nutrition, proper brain and organ function and a healthy, attractive appearance. Bad carbs on the other hand is detrimental to a healthy diet. And consistently eating from the bad carbs list will rapidly sabotage all your health and weight management goals.  You can check out the  carbohydrates from this great list of healthy carbohydrate foods.

She also said that good carbs are  an important part of a healthy low glycemic diet. Eating foods with a low glycemic index can help you lose weight and maintain healthy blood sugar and triglyceride levels to manage or avoid developing diabetes and heart disease.

So let us  find out what she  said about bad carbs.  According to her, bad carbs are carbohydrate foods that have been highly refined and processed, removing most of the nutritional value and fiber. They're generally loaded with high-calorie fats, sweeteners, preservatives and other unhealthy additives.  With all the processing and additives, bad carbs can be made to be temptingly tasty. But they create a dramatic surge in insulin, which can overwork your pancreas, cause you to store fat and lead to diabetes, heart disease, overweight and even obesity.

The basic bad carbs list includes:

  • All candies, jelly and jams,
  • Sodas, fruit juices, fruit drinks,
  • Pudding, custards and other sweets,
  • Processed refined grains, like white rice,
  • Bread and pasta made with any refined flour,
  • Cakes, cookies and other sweet bakery products.
She then concluded that both diabetes and obesity are on the rise worldwide, but are mostly skyrocketing in industrialized countries like US. Studies show that  this is mainly due to more and more people making poor food choices, causing a rapid increase in bad carb consumption.  I grew up eating rice and I can't cut it in my diet but I am  starting to   replace my white rice intake with wild rice.  I have yet to  get used to eating brown rice.  I do believe that mideration is the key, as long as you don't  over indulge in eating, you'd be okay.
