Protein Mix Breakfast #A-Spice-A-Day#30

I have  some online  threads to finish so I did not cook breakfast after  sending my kids to school.  I had these for breakfast instead.  I am munching on my protein mix as I  bloghop.  A ho=t cup of Trumoo chocolate milk  completes it.
A Spice A Day #30
January 30, 2014

  • My kids are finally back to school.  They went on a two hour delay this morning.  We walked and had our morning exercise.  I thought that  getting some fresh air outside would somehow   get rid of my migraine but it didn't.

Nutrition During Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is sought after for many different reasons from lifelong muscle conditions to weight loss programs. Whilst many people are aware of the benefits of physiotherapy and often seek it out to lose weight or improve muscle capabilities, some are often oblivious to the importance of having a well-balanced nutritional program as well. For some people, poor diet is something they just can’t escape due to the demands of everyday life. However, your local therapy centre may be able to give you the advice you need to improve your diet and see physical results, especially if you are overweight. Some chronic illnesses and diabetes in particular require a good nutritional plan so keeping an eye on your diet is extremely important. In addition, many common health problems are related to diet more than exercise, such as obesity. Here are a few points about diet you should consider during physical therapy including things your therapist might tell you on your next visit.

A positive intake of fibre is an extremely important component for any nutritional plan during physiotherapy as it helps fight off chronic illness. It is believed that most people fail to get anywhere near the recommended daily amount of fibre. Fibre is in all sorts of different foods such as fruit, vegetables and whole grain products. You can replace the usual white bread with brown bread and consider targeting five pieces of fruit and vegetables each day to improve your fibre intake.

One of the most ignored dietary benefits that should be focused on during physiotherapy is water. Water is available wherever you are and helps to rid your body of toxins and keep cells fully hydrated. Unfortunately, other drinks have dominated the market so much that water seems to be playing second-fiddle nowadays. Almost every physical activity you partake in will recommend regular water intake so you should try and keep hold of a bottle wherever you go.

Regular Meals

Skipping breakfast or lunch might not seem like such a big deal in the short term but it generally contributes to a poor diet. Many people who are obese might consider cutting meals out of their day entirely to reduce their weight. However, food is the fuel our body needs to operate efficiently making exercise all the more difficult for someone who doesn’t have a daily meal plan. What’s more, missing meals will increase your hunger and probably result in you venturing to the nearest fast food stall. With that in mind, consider setting up a strict daily plan to follow and choose healthy meals that you are likely to find appetizing.

Maintaining proper nutrition during your physical therapy is a good way of getting motivated. If you are looking to lose weight or improve muscle performance, healthy eating plans can really enhance your ability to improve and positive results are likely to show up a whole lot faster.

Breakfast at Home #A-Spice-A-Day#29

When my kids are  smaller, they aren't picky when it comes to  food that I serve but when they started going to school, they started to say "I don't like this and that".  It frustrate me sometimes, so  what I do is asked them what  they want to eat before I cook because I don't want to waste time making something that they won't eat.  It's time consuming sometimes because I have to  cook separate meals just to accommodate each of them.  Most of the time though,  I  made them compromise depending on what  is available in the kitchen for me to prepare.  Breakfast at home is a must especially when they go to school because I don't want them to go to school with empty stomach.

  • The kids are still off from school.  It's 17 degrees below is the temperature which can cause hypothermia and frostbite so I am so  glad that  the school is still closed.  They will be going back to school tomorrow.  This week was suppose to  have their Catholic School Week this week but  it will be reschedule at a later date.
  • I received a package from Ozeri and Gourmet Nut today, thank you sponsors!

#Trumoo Chocolate Marshmallow Milk #PerfectValentineMatch

My son is the only one who love drinking milk here at home but he just like the  plain milk.  My husband on the other hand,  likes to drink chocolate milk once in a while so I told him to try the new flavor of Trumoo which is the Chocolate marshmallow.  I  don't really drink fresh milk but  I can drink  chocolate milk .  Now, some likes it cold but  I like mine hot.  This is perfect for this  below freezing temperature that we have been having for a couple of weeks now.  Perfect to warm up my body.

Those that truly love chocolate milk, I bet you would like this too.  As  a first time  consumer of this Trumoo chocolate  marshmallow milk, I can say that I really love it.  This is a special flavor for the  love-month but would be available all year round.  You can buy this now at Target or at Walgreens.  By mid-February,  local stores will be carrying this  too.  In our area, Trumoo isn't available i  Walgreens.  We bought ours from Walmart.

M kids were off from school for about a week now and Trumoo helped me entertain them during days off from school. My  kids are like night and day so they prefer different ways on things.  My son love  to  drink his milk very cold in a sippy cup while the  little miss love it hot.  Trumoo chocolate milk can be so much fun to drink, you can add some crushed graham crackers or if you have a cinnamon stick, dip it in the cup and it is fun too.

Trumoo chocolate marshmallow milk is made with fresh  white milk then they added pure cocoa and  sugar to have that  delectable taste of  a chocolate milk.  Not only that it's delicious but it is also very nutritious. So are you ready to take your chocolate milk to the next level?  Check out Trumoo through their  Website and like them on their  Facebook page.  You can also follow them Twitter.  Use their  Store Locator to find the nearest store that  carries Trumoo.
I posted this photo of my sweetheart in Instagram. We participated in a sponsored post for #Trumoo. However, all opinions are our own.

Bitter Melon with Dried Shrimp #A Spice A Day#28

Sometimes when I get homesick and I am missing my family,  I turn to   food as my comfort.  Not the food here but  the food that I used to eat when I was still there.  That's when I cook foods that I miss, the food that reminds me of my family, the food that I can eat and fill that longing that I have for them.
I sometimes see this dried baby shrimps at an Asian store so I buy it and just  stock them in my  storage that way when I am craving for some native food, I cook.  I cook some bitter melon in coconut milk, lemon grass, hot peppers, onions, and the dried shrimp.  Do you  do what I do when getting homesick?

How to Prepare for a Fuss Free Dinner Party

Throwing a dinner party with friends is a great way to socialise and have a good time. Unfortunately though, it can often leave the host feeling stressed and overwhelmed. But this doesn’t need to be the case. You don’t need to blow your guests out of the water with an amazing meal. Just do what you feel comfortable with. By taking care to lower the fuss both you and your guests will enjoy yourselves more.

Do what you can in Advance

One of the best ways of making sure that your dinner party is stress free is to do everything that you can in advance. Meals can be cooked in advance, tables and chairs can be set up in advance. If you have as much as possible ready on the day, then you won’t need to run around in a hurry to get things done. Prepare your meals early, and you may only need to whip up a salad on the day.

Paper Plates

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using paper plates for a dinner party – especially if you are having a large amount of guests. Paper plates means that there won’t be a huge pile of dishes for you to finish once your guests have gone home, and nothing will be broken.

Eat Outside

If you’re worried about the state of your house, an easy option is to eat outside. Your guests will have a great time admiring the surroundings, and you don’t need to worry about any mess that has been left lying around.

Emergency Storage

If you’re set on eating inside, emergency storage can be great for hiding things before your guests arrive. Perhaps your lounge room is a bit cluttered, or your kids have left toys lying around. No stress. Just grab some spare boxes, pack the things away and store it in a cupboard until your guests go home. You don’t need to spend hours making sure that your house is a tidy as possible.

Having a barbeque is one of the easiest ways of throwing a dinner party. If you’re not a great cook, or you simply don’t have the time to prepare anything, this is a great way to ensure that your guests have a stress free and easy meal. Never rule out the barbeque option – especially if you are under the pump.

Throwing a dinner party can be a massive stress on the host, but it doesn’t need to be. The above steps show that it is possible to plan and throw a dinner party with minimal fuss. Make use of these techniques next time you have guests. If you’re worried about clutter, there are a number of places where you can purchased storage containers. Follow this URL to find the storage options that are right for you.

Savory Short Bread #A-Spice-A-Day#26

This savory short bread  was one of the goodies inside the "Love for Food" box last month.  I love this one.  It is flavored with rosemary.  Can you see the rosemary leaves in it?  Look closely, you will see.  At first you say, Ah what is that taste and then when you bite again you'd say "I like that!"

Southern Style Favorites

Ribs, barbecue, and other southern-style favorites are popular among many Americans today, thanks largely to the ever-expansive culinary pursuits of restaurant start-ups all over the country. Although not perceived as an elegant feast, many of these comfort foods have made main-stream popularity through their versatile taste, flavorful aromas, and abundant service sizes. Ribs, one of the most popular foods in American culture, have been seeing an array of interesting new preparation methods in restaurants today. Spicy, sweet, and elegant dishes containing baby back ribs are growing increasingly popular among the most famous chefs in television and culinary establishments.

Ribs have made a come-back in recent years, thanks heavily to the variety of new cooking and preparation techniques exhibited by today's top chefs. Spicy and oriental ribs have slightly deviated from their original southern flair, without compromising taste or origin recognition. This interesting take on ribs combines the east with the west, using traditional Asian ingredients alongside long-standing traditional American barbecue spices. Ribs have also seen many advancements in relation to technology, with more and more customers getting the ability to order their ribs and other comfort favorites online through their computers, phones, and tablets. is just one example of restaurants all across America jumping on the Internet-ordering bandwagon.

Mashed potatoes, another southern favorite often paired with ribs, barbecue, and other meat dishes, are also seeing a makeover in many restaurants. Mashed potatoes infused with spices like turmeric, saffron, and roasted-red pepper sauce are just a few of the interesting and quirky recipes showing up in many barbecue eateries and fine-dining establishments. Utah, along with other surrounding states in the nation, is often on the forefront of these new and interesting barbecue renovations. Its restaurants and chefs are bursting with ideas and interesting takes on the basic food that many Americans subside on regularly.
Pulled pork, another favorite among barbecue fans, is generally considered a main-stay in the hearts (and stomachs) of many diners. Some believe that there is absolutely no variation or deviation that can rival the original recipe. However, many chefs are currently on a mission to take on this challenge. Pulled pork with green olives, red pepper hummus, and sweet potato hamburger buns are just a few of the unique takes on this very popular, traditional barbecue favorite. However, no matter the perspective, most chefs go out of their way not to overtake the barbecue's original taste.

Wow Butter Filled Crepes #A-Spice-A-Day#25

Here's another idea  of filling you can make for your crepe.  You can use peanut butter or whatever spread you want.  In my case, I used the Wow Butter.  It turned out  delicious!  Some like to  pour syrup on top of crepes but I prefer  spread or filled it up with fruit jam or jelly or caramelized apple.

  • I was dreading the bitter cold walk this morning going to school.  The school informed us that there would be two hour delay today but this morning, they called and informed us of the school's closing, so thank God.  The windchill outside is negative 15 so yeah, it's painful when you are out there.
  • My  husband drove our daughter to her piano lessons.  He visited my FIL while  waiting for her.  We did not go because I have been feeling crappy  for four days now due to  cold.  He told me that  Dad told him that his late wife has been talking to him in his dreams and  he said that the other morning, he was dreaming of her again that she was cooking  breakfast for him and when he woke up, he could really smell the  potato cakes that she made.  He got and saw the potato cakes in the table.  The story gave me goosebumps.
  • I made a pot of macaroni salad again as requested.  For dinner , I made steak and mashed potatoes.

Portion Control Plate from Meal Measure

My husband has been struggling to  lose the pounds he have gained over the years after   retiring from the Navy.  He used to worked out almost everyday when he was still in the service but when he retired, it got less and less  because he loves playing with kids and spending  time with us.  As a result, he gained  some weight.  He  is very active in working out now but he is getting frustrated as he  is not getting the result that he wants.  We said that we might change  the  kind of foods that he eats and also  watch out the portion of  every serving of the foods that we have  for every meal.

I am glad that Meal Measure  sent me this Portion Control Plate.  This would help us determine if  the food serving  is what i-s causing to sabotage my husband's weight or not.  I am now using this a lot to measure how much  he can eat with certain foods.

There are 4 portion control areas. 2 for fruits or veggies, 1 for starches, and one for protein.  There is a line  in the middle which represent half a cup.  This is very easy to use as it measures the food right on your plate.  It fits most dinner plates and it is top rack dishwasher safe.

So you see, before having this portion control plate, my husband eats a good size especially if he likes the food that I cook but with this tool, I can control his servings.  Thank you so much Meal Measure for this.

Fried Food with Vegetable Salad #A-Spice-A-Day#23

When everybody wants something fried, making a bowl of salad would somehow counter balance it for a healthy meal.

I found out that shredding the carrots  smaller and chopping the lettuce in small pieces makes it more appetizing for the kids.  This is only the carrots and lettuce, I haven't add the bell pepper to this bowl.

Oloves: The Tasty Healthy Snacks

I have  posted some articles on this blog   about how much my kids love olives as a snack.  A friend of mine asked me if I wanted to do a review  about Oloves, I immediately said yes because  of my kids.  I am not fond of olives but my husband and kids are.  They love the ones we can buy in the can or the ones in the bottle.  I thought that this would be a perfect  one for them.  Oloves are natural  green pitted olives that are tasty and  healthy for snacks.

I think, the garlic in it  kind of threw off their palette as they said that it's very strong.  Only hubby loves garlic around here so I did not insist for them to continue eating them.  I did not want the Oloves to go to waste so I thought of incorporating it in my  cooking which I did and it turned out deliciously!
I added some of it into my beef caldereta and voila, yummy goodness is the result!  So even if my kids did not enjoy the Oloves as snack, they certainly enjoyed them in a dish as it toned down the flavor through other ingredients.
Oloves has different flavors.  I received three flavors which  includes Hot Chili Momma, Lemon Lover and Tasty Mediterranean.  I am glad that I tried Oloves as it is  very good  to use in cooking as well.  Thanks Oloves.

Grilled Chicken Breast #A-Spice-A-Day#22

This is what we had for dinner yesterday.  Grilled chicken breast with broccoli, ginger glazed apple, and kimchi as side dish.  We also had wild rice with this.  I love grilled chicken and I always  have kimchi when I ate  it.  My kids love  steamed broccoli.  The ginger glazed apple is a good topping for the chicken.  It has a little bit honey in it.

Baklava #A-Spice-A-Day#19

One of my husband's favorite dessert is baklava.  He said that he had this first when he was  in the Navy  tour in Asian countries.  Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey. The one that we bought from the store is not  really that great.  It was way too greasy and I don't like the chocolate they drizzled on top of them.  I like the one with nuts in it though.

Crepes #A-Spice-A-Day#18

My daughter is really good in making crepes.  She watches Giada on TV all the time and I can say that she learns a lot since she  tries some of them and it does turn out really well.  Heck, I can't even  make crepes lol.

When she first learned how to make it, we only  eat it plain but she  made a twist one day and  made an apple filling.  She cooked the apple with butter, cinnamon and some honey.  It was really good.

I can't believe that my 8 year old can pull this off.  When I was 8, I can only cook rice and  vegetable (gulay with gata and some spice) but my  little chef is making more than what I could make at her age.  Pardon me for  bragging but I  am just  so happy of what my little one can accomplish.

So for Moms out there,  don't be afraid to let your kids explore in the kitchen.  Let your kids help every time they want to.  With your guide and help, they will learn a lot!

Cupcakes #A-Spice-A-Day#17

My son has celebrated his birthday in school. I was thinking of making  some Asian  snacks for them but hubby said that  the kids are not used to it that they might not like it so we bought this colorful cup cakes to be served  for his classmates. • I am so burned out writing about  one topic for my 6 blogs but I am not complaining because it is a good amount of money that the advertiser is going to pay me.  It's very seldom that I get a task for over $200 in a day so I am happy.  It's just hard to write for one topic  so many times because you ran out of ideas lol.
  • I made some mushroom and beef for dinner.
  • Report Cards came in today and I am so proud of my children.  They have been consistently  bring us Straight As. My son also got all hundreds for his test except one but  he only missed one so it was still an A+.  Parents' involvement with kids academic stuff really is a great help for them to excel in classes.

Cocktail Dresses

Does anyone of you like to host a cocktail party? I have never been to any cocktail party and that's because I am not a party type of gal. The only formal parties that I have attended was when I was still working in school back in my original country, Philippines. Then hubby and I attended a ball when he was still in the Navy and that's about it.  Here are some photos of the Navy Ball we attended.
